Corsetry and Victorian Underwear

The Victorian silhouette was created mostly by undergarments. Long corsets round shaped the bust, held the waist and stomach in, shaped the hips and concealed other underwear worn beneath "stays" - including chemises (also known as "Shifts"). A chemise and bloomers/ "drawers" were often replaced by a garment combining the two called a "Combination".
